Bryna Ben-Asher, a Sabino Canyon Volunteer Naturalist and Tanuri Ridge resident coördinated a Tanuri Ridge Education and Recreation Series hike along the Sabino Canyon Dam Trail, with fellow Sabino Canyon volunteer Bruce Garrett. This was the most informative hike we have experienced since being here in Tucson. Because of scheduling conflicts, the group was small, making the experience much more personal for all involved in the hike with Bruce and his “talking stick.” The Sabino Canyon Volunteers organization are fortunate to have people like Bryna and Bruce in their organization. Next time I will have my video camera with me.
The cristate (or crested) saguaro is rare in the plant world. Science has not yet fully explained why this mutation occurs — many explanations have been offered. This one is located near the Sabino Canyon dam.
Sabino Canyon Creek is running low this year. Little rain in the Catalina’s and snow on Mount Lemmon has resulted in few spring wildflowers and no water running over the low-water crossings in the canyon.
We finally saw the movie, 127 Hours last night. OK, so most people know the plot of the film, based on Aron Ralston’s survivor autobiography, Between a Rock and a Hard Place, so why see it? Two reasons – director Danny Boyle and James Franco, as Aron Ralston, take you into the dark, dusty, narrow Utah canyon, and the introspective mind of Ralston, allowing the you to be a voyeur in this truly terrifying and intense experience. Oh, and the cinematography an’t bad either – how could it not be with such exquisite geology. I could watch this film again, which is saying a lot for me.
On the lighter side, I offer this video cartoon de jour, I mean given the topic and the setting, it’s perfect for Wile E. Coyote.
In 1985, while in Washington, D.C. for a conference, I bought this poster for Joy, and it has been proudly hanging in our home since that time. Like a lot of women and men, she was very pleased to see a female as a major party candidate for the second highest office in the nation — it also helped that she was a Democrat. It is with sadness that today we learned that Geraldine Ferraro died at age 75 from a long battle with cancer. Read more . . .
While David, Janie and the girls were here we attended the Tucson Festival of Books on the campus of the University of Arizona. This two-day event attracted over 100,000 people and over 450 authors and 240 exhibitors. The event includes a lot of hands-on activities , presentations and reading for all age groups illustrating how “words and imagination come to life.” A very impressive event, indeed.

When we moved to Tanuri Ridge, one of the first things that seemed to be missing as a vehicle for community communications was a newsletter. So, I made a proposal to the HOA Board to start one. Click on this link Tanuri Ridge Spring Newsletter for a pdf file of the newsletter.
