Scratching The Surface — Ralph Prata   10 comments

“Inside the Outside” by Ralph Prata

This past Sunday, we took Joy’s mother and sister to the nearby DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun. Years ago, as part of his Santa Catalina Foothills property, Ted DeGrazia built a Guest House for artists to work and show their work. Today the DeGrazia Foundation continues this legacy during the winter months. During our visit, we had an opportunity to see the work of Ralph Prata. Ralph resides in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York, but he, his wife, and their cat spend the winter months near Ventana Canyon.

We immediately fell in love with Prata’s work, so we went back three times, selecting different pieces to see what would best show his work in our foothills home. So the above, “Inside the Outside,” is now in place to welcome visitors to our home, where we live “inside the outside.”

Prata has said of his work, “My works do not necessarily document particular life ways nor tell stories. Rather they are to touch the spirit and imagination. Allowing the viewers the freedom to find their visions.” Our spirit has been “touched.” To celebrate our getting to know Ralph and his art, I wrote the following poem:

Inside the Outside

I began on the inside,
Knowing not of an outside,
Only knowing of my being.
My knowledge is limited,
A temporary prisoner,
Protected by the inside.
Demanding more room,
Life on inside
Began to grow short.
Having no choice,
Pushed from the womb
Into the world of the unknown.
On the inside,
I had been content
In my limited space.
Now on the outside,
I let it be known,
Crying in the face of a new destiny.
My first act of rebellion,
Already expressing nostalgia
For the innocence of the inside.
Appealing to my essence of being,
I soon learned the outside
Could be my new inside.
Always giving away,
Some of the outside,
So not to lose it all.
To become inside the outside,
Allows the practice of thinking
To create a way of living.

The Tree of Forgiveness

Sun setting

over the mountain gods

ducks swimming

in shadows of togetherness

two aging souls

sensing the present

voices grow louder

alongside

the sound of silence

standing beneath

the tree of forgiveness

where the gods

take pity on us –

Cartoon de jour — “IT IS HARD WALKIN’ ON THIS STUFF.”   Leave a comment

Source: Google.com

Walt Kelly’s message, “We have met the enemy and he is us,” which he effectively communicated through Pogo, is a firm but gentle approach at telling the truth. Yet, we are still living in an economic, environmental and moral “garbage dump” forty years after Porky and Pogo first looked over their trash filled swamp. Where are the all-wise Pogos’ of the world when we need them?

“YEP, SON, WE HAVE MET THE ENEMY AND HE IS US.”

Capturing the Word — The Now   4 comments

The Now

(In the Zen of the now,
past and future exist as one.)

Living for the moment
Creates a false state of being,
Of setting you free.
Forget the moment; live for the now.

Being in the moment is to
Have a beginning and an end,
Boundaries where you cannot be free.
Forget the moment; live for the now.

Having a beginning and an end
It is not to have a past nor a future,
Without which, you cannot be free.
Forget the moment; live for the now.

Self-fulfilling nature of the moment
Creates fear of the unknown —
Fear the unknown is not to be free.
Forget the moment; live for the now.

Experiencing the now is to
Know the past and learn of the future,
Releasing fear and setting you free.
Forget the moment; live for the now.

Learning takes place only in the now
Containing life’s recipe (the past),
Providing directions to being free.
Forget the moment; live for the now.

Giving of the now
Is to create a future,
In which you can be free.
Forget the moment; live for the now.

Living for the now is to give worth
To the past and value to the future,
A future of being free.
Forget the moment; live for the now.

Living in the now is to experience
Love and life’s peak experiences,
By which others can be free.
Forget the moment; live for the now.

House in a Field of Lonely Dreams

Many lives,
shared this roof.
Many hands
worked the land.
Now forgotten
tired and worn
windows broken
doors unfastened
through which
no one enters
from the windswept
field of lonely dreams.

Capturing the Word — A Song of Silence   3 comments

A Song of Silence

Music is
what enables you
in your work,
soothes you
when you rest
reminds you
of images past
of dreams yet fulfilled.

It is not the words,
nor the beat,
nor the instruments,
nor the relationships.
It is the rhythm
of the moments,
composed by the
silence in between.
