Ashton Savoy K&MBluesProject ll blogAshton Savoy with The Moe Hansum Band at Ken & Mary’s Blues Project, 2002

The first time we attended one of Ken & Mary’s Blues Project events, we were impressed! Not because of the number of very good musicians, but because Ashton Savoy was playing. What an evening!

We just learned today that this Blues legend passed away last Friday (May 15, 2009). We knew he had been ill, but still surprised and saddened to get the news.

Coincidentlly, some of the Friends of the Blues started up a new Blues blog site, www.FOBulous.wetpaint.com on the 15th.

  1. Wow! Those photos bring back memories of a very special night at the Blues Project. Not only was Ashton there, so was our good friend A.J. and the Moe Hansum band. It was the first time Colin Brooks now with the Band of Heathens played. (They are setting the world on fire with their Americana sound. We are seeing them at the Duck tonigh). Amazing, we had 13 musicians in our living room that night and it was so magicial!! ( It was one of those masive Texas rains that brought the music inside) We were listening to a CD Buddy Allen made of that special night on our way home from Ashton’s services today. It brought tears and a smile. We were so blessed by his friendship over the years. He played with many of the greats yet loved coming up here to our home to share his music with our family and firends. We would literaly have to unplug his amp to end the evening often after 2:00am so everyone could get ready to go home. He outlasted thsoe younger musicians!! Awesome memories and stories.
Glad you are documenting them for us. Thanks.

  2. We would love to be with you guys at the Duck tonight, but we are still doing one day at a time with Joy’s cough, etc. I’m hoping the FOBulous site will become more active for area Blues input. I’m slowly putting photos, links, and stories on that site. The Blues project has a lot more history than the Blues Series (at least the Project is still going), but I thought it would be a place to start sharing some of the old stuff working as a catalyst for new Blues Stuff.

When it comes to live music, we live in a great area. Have fun tonight!
